The Real Cost of Getting There
A one-way flight from Portland, Oregon to Bangkok costs $480 per person on Korean Air. That is a real number from a real booking, not a promotional fare that evaporates when you try to pay. The reason it was one-way is simple: six months in Southeast Asia makes any return date a guess. Round-trip tickets are usually cheaper than two one-ways, but they only work if you actually know when you are coming home. If you don’t, you pay for that flexibility.
The same logic applies to what you bring. One traveller paid $118 for an economy seat and then $208 more to upgrade to business class. The upgrade was not about legroom. It was about not checking camera gear. That is $326 total for a seat and a guarantee that the equipment arrives with them. Whether that math works depends entirely on what is in your bag.
Cheaper Beds, More Expensive Days
A hostel that costs £1 less per night but sits a £3 tuk-tuk ride from everything is not cheaper. It is more expensive. The saving at the front desk disappears by the second day, and you spend the trip calculating rides instead of walking to dinner. Location is the line item most budget travellers forget to price in. A central bed at a higher nightly rate often wins once transport is counted. This is not a rule about hostels specifically. It applies to any accommodation anywhere.
Vietnam and Indonesia, Priced Out
Vietnam has developed fast. An economic boom changed the country while prices stayed low enough to keep it attractive to a wide range of travellers. Upscale options exist now if you want them. You can also spend $25 to $30 per day as a budget traveller. Both versions of the trip are available in the same country, sometimes on the same street.
Indonesia splits the same way. Java’s cities are well connected by train. Economy class from Jakarta to Surabaya takes 11 hours and costs about $42. Executive class takes 8 hours and costs $96. Three hours saved for $54 more. On Nusa Penida, tours leave from near the yellow bridge for around 500,000 IDR, which is about $35, and cover some combination of the island’s main attractions. It costs extra compared to wandering on your own. The guided version is still worth recommending, because the island’s roads and distances are not kind to people figuring it out as they go.
Kazakhstan and Mexico, Two Extremes
Kazakhstan is the 9th largest country in the world. To feel that size, the recommendation is to cross the whole thing west to east on a Soviet train. That is not a shortcut. It is the point. The train is the attraction, and the distance is the experience.
Mexico runs on a different calendar. Every November, on the 1st and 2nd, the entire country joins a mass celebration of the dead. Decorated sugar skulls, candy treats and baked goods appear everywhere. If your dates are flexible, those two days are worth planning around rather than stumbling into.
Safaris and the Case for Two Countries
Combining countries on a safari breaks up the routine. Different lodges, new guides, varied ecosystems, from volcanic craters to endless plains. The wildlife is the draw, but the repetition is the risk. Two countries in one trip costs more in logistics and less in boredom.
None of this is complicated. The numbers do the work. $480 to Bangkok. $25 to $30 a day in Vietnam. $42 or $96 across Java, depending on how much of your life you want to spend on a train. $35 for a guided day on Nusa Penida. £1 saved on a bed and £3 spent on a ride. The cheap option and the expensive option are often the same option, depending on where you put the decimal point.
