Pick the Cities First
The per-city table is the place to start. Not the flight, not the visa, not the insurance. Pick the region and the cities, and the table tells you what your tier costs there. Everything else follows from that number.
Get that wrong and no amount of clever packing saves you. A week in Switzerland can cost a family of four $6,000 to $7,000. A week in Thailand or Mexico might cost less than $2,500 with equal or greater fun. Same week. Same four people. The destination does most of the work.
That gap is the whole game. Nobody is going to hand you a cheaper Switzerland. You either pay the Switzerland number or you go somewhere else.
What Each Tier Actually Costs
Luxury visitors may spend $2,800 to $7,000 or more. The final cost depends on hotel category, room type, private transfers and premium experiences. That is the top of the scale, and it is worth knowing what the top of the scale looks like even if you never touch it. It tells you what you are declining.
For contrast, take a fixed cost from a life already lived. Pre-nomad, pre-2018 Seattle-area housing costs ran $2,700 a month for mortgage plus utilities. That is $32,400 a year, or $89 a day. Housing alone. No food, no transport, no visa, nothing.
Hold that $89 next to a week in Thailand or Mexico under $2,500. Four people, seven days. The arithmetic is not subtle.
Visas and the Fees Nobody Mentions
Upon arrival you will need to pay for a visa, which is $50. Simple enough.
Then there is the healthcare surcharge. It runs $470 for a visa valid for six months or less, and $940 for a visa valid for more than six months. That is not a rounding error. On a six-month trip it is a real line in the budget, and it lands before you have paid for a single night’s accommodation.
Some destinations stack fees in ways that only appear once you are inside them. Driving from Arusha toward the Serengeti, rather than flying, takes you through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. That adds $141 in entrance fees for two adults on top of the Serengeti fees. Two adults, one road, $141. The Serengeti fees shown are not the full story.
Culture visits carry their own price. A basic visit to the Hadzabe tribe runs around $150 per person.
Insurance Is Not Where You Save
The cheapest travel insurance plan may not fit you best. Spending $18 more upgrades you from basic to comprehensive coverage, with $100,000 medical limits instead of $25,000. Eighteen dollars. Between $25,000 and $100,000 of cover.
For scale, most travel insurance policies average between 4% and 10% of the trip’s total prepaid, non-refundable expenses. If your prepaid, non-refundable spend is $2,000, that is $80 to $200. If it is $500, it is $20 to $50. The premium tracks what you have already committed and cannot get back.
The $18 upgrade sits inside that range, and it is the cheapest decision in this entire article.
Time Is the Real Variable
More time is always better. Four weeks in Costa Rica is a good shape for a trip, but one week spent only in Puerto Viejo, doing nothing in particular, also works. Both are legitimate. They cost differently.
That is the honest version of budget travel. It is not one trick. It is choosing the region, choosing the cities, reading the per-city table before you book anything, and then noticing that a $50 visa, a $470 surcharge, $141 in park fees and $18 of extra insurance are all real numbers that either fit your tier or do not.
Find your cheap ticket if you like. Then look at the luggage fees, because they are waiting.
