What A Ticket Actually Costs
A ticket from Brussels to Liège costs $18.14 one way. Round trip, $36.29. That is Belgium, a country with a reputation for expensive everything, and the train still costs less than a bad airport sandwich. Compare that to Rome to Florence at about $40 if you book early. Same continent. Similar distance, roughly. The price gap tells you more about booking timing than about Italy.
Entrance fees are where the arithmetic gets strange. The Studio Ghibli Museum charges ¥1,000 per adult, which is $6. Six dollars to walk into one of the most oversubscribed small museums on the planet. Meanwhile a single national parks pass in the United States runs $80 per year and covers entrance to every national park, national wildlife refuge, and BLM day-use site. Eighty dollars annually. If you visit four parks in a year you have already beaten the per-site rate, and the pass keeps working in December.
The Thailand Number
Thailand has a new ฿300 tourist entry fee arriving in 2026. That converts to roughly $8.30 at current rates. Set against a comfortable mid-range trip costing $70 to $120 per day including accommodation and meals, the entry fee is a rounding error. It is less than one dinner.
Food splits the budget more than fees ever will. Light lunches — a sandwich, fruit, a snack, a cold drink — come in below $12. A dinner with a starter, a main, a dessert and two drinks averages $30 to $40. Do that twice a day for a week and you have spent more on meals than on every museum, park and monument combined. The entry fees were never the problem.
Cash, Cards, And The Three Percent
Most local stalls in Thailand still prefer cash. That has not changed. What has changed is that PromptPay QR codes are now nearly universal, so if you have a local Thai bank app or a compatible international wallet you can pay digitally even at small carts. High-end tourist markets may accept credit cards, usually with a 3% surcharge. Three percent on a $40 dinner is $1.20. On a month of mid-range spending it adds up to real money, and it is entirely avoidable if you carry cash for the big-ticket places and use the QR system for the small ones.
The Sri Lanka Comparison
In Sri Lanka, two people stayed in private double rooms with exterior bathrooms at guest houses for 1,000 LKR per night. That is $9.06 for the room, not per person. The travellers described it as adequate and roughly average to low for the country, with prices climbing closer to the tourist beaches. Nine dollars a night for two people is the kind of number that makes a $6 museum ticket feel almost irrelevant. Accommodation is the line item that decides whether a country is cheap for you. Fees are noise.
Thirty Dollars A Day
Traveling for $30 per day is still possible in some countries. The conditions are specific: dorms or guest houses, local food, public transport. Major tours, domestic flights, alcohol and private rooms will push you past that figure quickly. A week on the ground at backpacker level runs $310 to $640. It will not stretch to mid-range hotels or daily paid tours.
The miscellaneous slice is where budgets quietly die. Three books at $24. Overland guide tips across two 14-day tours at $40. Two replacement pairs of sunglasses at $20. Postcards and stamps at $17. Laundry four times at $14. None of these are entrance fees. All of them are option
