What A Day Costs
Travelers in Mexico typically spend around $81 per day for what gets called Standard travel. That comes to $567 for one week. Daily expenses at that level include accommodation, food, local transport, and sightseeing.
You can go lower. If you are hoping to get by in Mexico on $40 per day per person, or even $30 if you are willing to sleep in hostel dorms, you will definitely be able to do it. That range is not a stretch or a special case. It is the ordinary floor.
The spread matters more than the average. A day at $81 and a day at $30 buy different trips. The $81 day includes sightseeing and a room without strangers in it. The $30 day includes a dorm bed and whatever you can walk to.
The Food Math
Local food in Mexico is cheap. You can get by on $1 to $2 a meal if you are on a tight budget. If you are willing to splurge, you will be looking at paying as much as $10 per meal.
Three meals at the low end is $3 to $6 per day. Three meals at the high end is $30. That single choice, repeated three times a day, is the largest lever you have. It swings your daily total by more than most accommodation choices will.
The $10 meal is not a luxury restaurant. It is the splurge end of ordinary local eating. The cheap end is not a compromise on quality either. It is just cheaper.
Getting Around
In Mexico City, the subway is really cheap. Roughly 30 cents a ride. You can move across a large city for less than the cost of a piece of fruit.
That number does more work than it looks like. A week of two rides a day is about $4.20. A month is about $18. Transport stops being a budget line you worry about and becomes a rounding error.
The Six-Week Trip
On a six-week trip through Mexico, the money spent on what gets filed under other costs was not much. Those costs were random: tips, bathroom fees, laundry, a SIM card and mobile data. None of them were planned. All of them were small.
This is the category that quietly breaks budgets. Not the flights. Not the hostels. The 10-peso caramelo here, the bathroom fee there. On a long trip they add up, but in Mexico they added up slowly.
The trip being described here was a flashpacker budget, run in 2016 and 2017. No to dorm rooms. Mostly yes to air conditioning. No to major luxuries. That is a different trip from the $30-a-day version, and it cost more. The point is that both exist in the same country at the same time.
One traveler’s total budget across 3.5 months, or 106 days, in Mexico is a matter of record. So is the cost of travel to Mexico for those same 3.5 months. The two numbers are separate. Getting there and being there are different expenses, and the second one is the one you control.
Flights And Timing
Flights are expected to remain pricey in 2024. Mexico should continue to have affordable airfare anyway. That is the useful part. The global picture on flight prices is bad. The picture for Mexico specifically is not.
November 1st and 2nd is Día de Los Muertos. Families commemorate their dead relatives by setting up offerings. There are parades and elaborate costumes. It is a major festival, and it is a vibrant and lively affair, to use the phrase that gets attached to it.
If you are in Mexico on those dates, you will spend money. If you are not, you will not. Neither is wrong.
The Honest Range
A Mexico trip can run at $30 a day per person in a dorm. It can run at $40 a day per person outside one. It can run at $81 a day at the Standard level, which is $567 a week. Meals run from $1 to $2 at the bottom and up to $10 at the top. Subway rides in Mexico City run about 30 cents.
The gap between the cheapest version and the most expensive version of the same country is enormous. That gap is the whole story. You are not choosing between Mexico and somewhere else. You are choosing which Mexico you can afford, and the answer changes with every meal and every bed.
