What Two Countries Actually Cost
Nicaragua and Honduras are not the same trip twice. The numbers below come from travellers who kept track, and the spread between a cheap week and an expensive one is mostly accommodation and transport.
Start with the daily floor. A solo trekker in Nepal — different country, useful benchmark — runs $20 to $25 a day covering food, lodging, transport, permits, wifi and a hot shower. Central America sits in a similar band if you eat where locals eat and sleep in dorms. Hostel private rooms run $15 to $30 a night. That is the ceiling for a room to yourself, not a floor.
Getting around cities is cheap. Ride-hailing trips land between $2 and $8 for most journeys. Buses between towns cost less. The money leaks out in the long-haul legs and in the weeks you choose to travel.
Timing Beats Haggling
Accommodation is the most volatile line in any budget, and it spikes hard in July and August. Moving to the shoulder seasons — May or September — saves 20 to 40 percent on lodging. That is not a rounding error. On a two-week trip it is the difference between a private room and a dorm, or between two extra days and going home early.
Flights reward early movement. Domestic routes want six to eight weeks of lead time. International routes want two to three months. Hotels are best booked one to two months out, though refundable rates locked in earlier protect you if prices climb. Popular activities sell out one to two weeks ahead. Everything else you can decide the day of.
Day of the week matters too. Departing Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday is usually cheaper than Friday, Saturday or Sunday. On one comparable route the gap reached $500. That is a full extra week of travel in this region, spent on nothing but a calendar choice.
One caveat worth carrying into 2026: the old assumption that hostels are always the cheap option is thinning in high-demand cities. Amsterdam hostel prices rose 65 percent between 2023 and 2026. Some Parisian hostels now average €180 a night, which converts to about $194 — the same as a three-star hotel. Nicaragua and Honduras are not Amsterdam. But the pattern is worth watching anywhere crowds arrive faster than beds do.
Insurance, Porters, and the Small Stuff
Standalone travel medical insurance is the cheapest form of trip protection available. Recent sales data puts it at roughly $5 a day. Buy it. A clinic visit without it costs more than the policy does.
If you hire a porter on a trek, expect $20 to $25 a day. That person carries about 20 kilograms of your load. It is a fair price for work that will wreck your knees otherwise.
Cards and cash deserve a thought before you fly. Accounts now support more than 40 currencies for holding and exchange, and linked debit cards keep international fees off your spending. That matters more in places where ATMs are inconsistent and every withdrawal carries a charge.
Where the Money Really Goes
Food and drink is the line that surprises people. One pair of travellers who ate very well — sharing dishes at times — spent $12,474 on food and drink alone. That is an extreme, and it is a useful one. It shows that the daily budget you set is not a law of nature. It is a decision you remake at every meal.
Prague makes the contrast plain. Beer there still costs $1.50 to $2 a pint, but moving out to Olomouc, Brno or Cesky Krumlov cuts hotel prices nearly in half. The same logic runs through Central America. The town one bus ride from the famous one charges less for the same bed.
The six mistakes that blow a travel budget are usually the same six. Booking late. Booking in peak season. Paying full price for a room you could have had cheaper two streets over. Eating every meal in the tourist zone. Skipping insurance and paying for it at a clinic. And treating a fixed daily number as something you cannot move.
None of it requires discipline so much as attention.
