What Things Actually Cost
A one-hour Uber across Delhi costs $7. Most rides come in at a dollar or two. That single fact reorganizes how you think about a day. If moving across a huge, polluted city costs less than a coffee in most Western capitals, walking for three hours to save the fare is not frugality. It is just punishment.
Mexico has gotten more expensive against the dollar, but not dramatically. Last year you could often get 20 pesos to the dollar at peak rates. Now it is nearing 18. That is a real squeeze on a long trip, roughly a 10 percent haircut on everything you buy, but it has not destroyed the country as a budget destination. The cheapest major country to reach from the US runs $250 to $450 round trip, and often less on sales. Skip the resort zones. In Oaxaca, Mexico City or Merida, tacos run $1, boutique rooms $30 to $50, and world-class museums cost a few dollars.
The Middle Tier
There is a band of travel that sits above shoestring and below comfort, and it is where a lot of people actually land once they get tired of dorm beds. Local travelers seeking a bit of comfort usually pay between $40 and $60 a day. That buys a private guesthouse room, restaurant visits that are not every meal, and structured tours. It is not luxury. It is a mattress with a door and a guide who knows where they are going.
Getting the money right matters more than most people admit. Each country has its own currency, from the Uzbek Som to the Kazakh Tenge. Cards work in major cities. Cash is still the norm in small towns and markets. Bring US dollar cash in new notes, because those exchange easily locally. Old, torn or marked bills cause problems you do not want to spend an afternoon solving.
Ferries and Fixed Costs
Some transport has no budget work-around. Ferries are the clearest example. After looking hard for an alternative, the honest total was around $60 for three separate ferries. That is not a rounding error. It jacked the grand total up considerably. When a route only crosses by water, you pay what the boat charges or you do not cross.
Then there are the luxury options that exist purely to be declined. The Hiram Bingham train service can be requested at $840 per person. That is not a typo and it is not a package. It is a train seat. For the same money you could cover roughly 14 days at the $60 comfort tier, or 120 one-hour Uber rides in Delhi, or 840 tacos in Oaxaca. Knowing the number is useful even if you never pay it. It tells you where the ceiling is.
When the Plan Breaks
Budget travel fails in small, specific ways. A pre check-in that does not function. A pickup address that is wrong because the shop no longer exists there. A taxi to a different budget shop costing about $25. None of that is dramatic. It is just money leaving your pocket for reasons that have nothing to do with fun.
That is the honest shape of a trip. A $7 ride here, a $1 taco there, a $60 ferry crossing you could not avoid, and a $25 taxi you did not plan for. Add them up and you get a daily figure. For some people that figure is $130. For others it is $40. Both are real. Neither is a failure.
The Comparison Nobody Needs
For scale, consider what else money buys. A custom toilet seat encrusted with jewels, reportedly worth around $105,000. A car collection valued at well over $50 million, full of rare vehicles from all over the world. These are not travel budgets. They are different universes. The point of knowing them is not envy. It is calibration. When you know a jeweled toilet seat costs $105,000 and a night in a private guesthouse in a Mexican city costs $30 to $50, you understand exactly what you are choosing. You are choosing the guesthouse. That is not a sacrifice. It is arithmetic.
