What the Numbers Say
Trinidad and Tobago sits in the southern Caribbean, and the cost picture travellers report is uneven. Some of what follows is drawn from people who have actually priced out a trip, and some of it is drawn from forums where the arithmetic got messy. Both are useful.
Start with accommodation, because it is usually the biggest line. One reported figure puts lodging at $85 per night, which is $170 per night for the room. That is the room rate, not a per-person rate, so a couple splitting it pays $85 each. A single traveller pays the whole thing. This matters when you are trying to work out a daily budget, and it matters more when you are one person rather than two.
Food and the Daily Math
Food is where the numbers get slippery. For comparison, a rough ballpark for food in Thailand is $10 a day, and that is a useful anchor because it tells you what a genuinely cheap country looks like. Trinidad and Tobago is not that. It is not Norway either, but nobody is eating on $10 a day here unless they are cooking every meal in a hostel kitchen.
Uruguay offers a better comparison for the region. Lunch in a local restaurant there ran about UYU 350, or $12. A McDonald’s meal came in at about UYU 280, or $10. Shopping and cooking your own food, travellers reported, is not that crazy in price, and staying somewhere with cooking facilities is the cheapest way to travel. That logic travels. A hostel with a kitchen changes the arithmetic more than any other single decision.
So: a local lunch in the region costs roughly what a fast-food meal costs, and neither is cheap enough to do three times a day on a tight budget. Cook breakfast. Cook some dinners. Eat out once.
Getting Around
Air transport does not come cheap. Scheduled flights run around $300 per person each way per flight. That is per person, per leg. If your route involves two flights in each direction, you are looking at $1,200 before you have paid for a bed.
Ground transport has an option worth knowing about. Shared taxis, known locally as Grands Taxis, often run set routes between cities or towns and can be more cost-effective than buses or trains, especially if you are travelling in a group. Agree on the fare before you depart. That last point is not a suggestion.
For anyone arriving from Europe rather than the US, there is a separate route worth pricing. The fast ferry from Tarifa in southern Spain to Tangier costs approximately EUR 38 one way, which converts to about $41, and takes 35 minutes. That is not Trinidad and Tobago, but it is the kind of number that gets compared when people are weighing a Caribbean trip against a Mediterranean one.
The 2026 Fee Changes
Several new fees took effect in early 2026. Factor these into your total trip budget. That is the whole of it. No breakdown was given, and inventing one would be worse than leaving it vague, so treat any quoted total as incomplete until you have checked the current fee schedule yourself.
What Groups Keep Asking
The questions travellers ask each other about this kind of trip are consistent. A couple will ask what a given budget looks like for two people. A group of two couples and one single will ask whether to divide the cost of a stay by three or by five. Neither question has a universal answer, because it depends entirely on how the rooms are configured and who is sleeping where. A room that sleeps two costs the same whether one person or two are in it. A room that sleeps three does not divide evenly among five.
What is clear is that the per-night figure of $85, or $170 for the room, is the number to build from. Two people sharing pay $85 each per night. One person alone pays $170. A group of five in two rooms is doing a different calculation again, and the honest answer is that somebody always subsidises somebody.
The other recurring note, from people who have done this kind of travel: they want to go the budget route, but they are not ready to spend the money until they know they want to travel that way. That is a reasonable position. The numbers above are enough to tell you roughly what it costs. They are not enough to tell you whether you will enjoy it.
