Fiji gets sold as a honeymoon destination. That is a marketing problem, not a travel problem.

The numbers tell a different story. A mid-range two-week trip generally costs between $840 and $1,400. That figure covers comfortable hotels, one or two domestic flights and several day tours. Read that again. Two weeks in Fiji for less than the price of a single night at the Tokyo Edition, Toranomon, where a king standard room runs $911 per room per night.

What Flights Actually Cost

Airfare is where the budget lives or dies. Book midweek or on Saturdays. Tickets tend to run higher on Sundays, Mondays and Fridays. That pattern holds across most routes, and it holds for Fiji.

The comparison that should reframe everything: flight tickets cost around $100 on the routes between Kathmandu and Pokhara. Flying to Ramechhap or Lukla runs around $220 one-way. Those are short mountain hops on small aircraft, and they cost real money. Fiji sits in the Pacific, so getting there is not a $100 proposition. But once you are in the islands, the internal flights that connect the main island to the smaller ones are the ones to watch. One or two domestic flights fit inside the $840 to $1,400 two-week range. That is the whole point of the range.

Getting Around

Rideshare services often cost just $1 or $2 for a two or three-mile ride by motorbike. That is the real transport budget in a lot of places, and it is the number to keep in your head when someone quotes you a resort transfer.

Scooter rental is a budget-friendly way to get around town. This is documented behaviour, not theory. One traveller named Jeremy had never driven a scooter before Bali, and outside of one small crash, he got the hang of it. The same logic applies on Fiji’s main island, where the roads are flat and the distances between towns are short. The crash is part of the data too. Budget for the scooter and budget for the learning curve.

Food and Drink

Cocktails in Southeast Asia cost about the same as they do in the US: $5 to $7, outside of the occasional happy hour deal. Anyone who tells you Asia is uniformly cheap on alcohol is working from an old script. Fiji sits in a similar bracket. The resort cocktail is a resort cocktail wherever you are.

The most expensive meal logged on one traveller’s route through Sri Lanka came to 1,240 LKR at a place called Secret Alley in Kandy. That converts to roughly $4. One meal. Four dollars. The point is not that Fiji matches Sri Lanka. The point is that the “most expensive meal” on a real trip is often a number that would barely register as a rounding error back home.

The Long Trip Question

There is a version of this where you stretch the budget across eight months and cover only Southeast Asia and South America. That was one traveller’s plan, arrived at specifically so the budget would hold. Eight months. Two regions. The constraint is the itinerary, not the willpower.

Fiji does not fit into that eight-month plan in the same way. It is a Pacific stop, and the flights are the cost. But a two-week trip at $840 to $1,400 is not a compromise. It is the actual price of the actual thing. Comfortable hotels. Domestic flights. Day tours. Nothing stripped out.

The Four Pillars

Travel costs break down into four buckets: transport, accommodation, food and activities. Every budget argument you have ever had with yourself lives in one of those four. The Fiji numbers map onto them cleanly. Flights are the transport bucket and they are the biggest one. Accommodation is where the $840 to $1,400 range flexes most, because “comfortable hotel” covers a wide span.

Food and activities are the two you control in real time. A $4 meal and a $2 motorbike ride are not austerity. They are just the going rate. The mistake is assuming the going rate in Fiji looks like the going rate at a resort bar, where a cocktail costs $5 to $7 and a room costs more than a fortnight of travel.

Book midweek or Saturday. Keep the domestic flights to one or two. Stay two weeks, not eight months. The math works.
