It is also recommended, which is a distinction worth holding onto, because optional and recommended are not the same price.
That number sits at the low end of what a guided day costs almost anywhere. Hold it next to Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka, Twenty to Forty
It would be easy to spend $20 to $40 a day in Sri Lanka if you go flat out. That figure assumes national parks, the attractions that appear in every tourist guide, and a pace that does not stop. Twenty dollars is the floor of that behaviour. Forty is the ceiling. Neither number includes what you spend when you slow down, which is usually less.
The arithmetic is simple. A park entry plus a driver plus a ticket window plus lunch is a full day of spending. Two of those in a row and the daily average climbs past what a guesthouse costs. The guide is not the expensive part. The moving is.
One Cocktail, One Night
One cocktail in a tourist bar equals one full day of accommodation in Southeast Asia. That is the whole argument in one line. The drink is priced for the people who flew in for a week. The room is priced for the people who are still there in three weeks. Make your own coffee and the saving is $50 a week without much effort. Not a sacrifice. Just a switch.
The Fees Question
New tourist fees in Thailand for 2026 are a live question, and the honest answer is that they change. What matters for planning is not the exact figure but the habit of checking before you land. A fee announced in January is a line in a budget by March. Morocco is cheaper than most people assume, and the cost guides that ask whether it is expensive tend to answer no. The places that get called expensive are usually expensive in one category only, and it is rarely the tours.
Cruise Days and Safari Days

Family-owned and budget are different claims. It means the company survived six decades of changing fees, changing seasons, and changing answers to the Thailand question.
What the Numbers Say
The pattern across all of it is that guided days cluster. Albania at $22 to $32. Sri Lanka at $20 to $40 if you push. A Caribbean cruise day priced by cabin and season. A safari priced by country and connection. None of these are the same product, and all of them cost roughly what a night costs, or a few nights, depending on where you are standing.
The cocktail line is the cleanest one. One drink, one night. Once you have that ratio in your head, most activity pricing stops being mysterious. You are not buying the tour. You are buying the day, and the day has a rate.
