Two Ways to Sleep Cheap
A tent site in a national park runs $30 to $35 a night at places like Grand Canyon and Rocky Mountain. A state park electric hookup sits at $35 to $45. That is the mountain floor. Add $60 to $90 total if you are counting the wider spread, and you have a bed for less than the price of one restaurant meal in Venice.
The beach has no equivalent floor. Cheap beach beds exist, but they are regional, not universal. The coast is where budgets stretch or snap depending on which coast you picked.
What Lunch Costs
A lunch in Bangkok is 675 baht, or $21. Move north to Chiang Mai and the same meal is 475 baht, or $15. Dinner for two on Railay Beach in Krabi runs 850 baht, or $27. That is the Thai beach premium in one line: the sand costs you roughly $6 more per head than the city, and $12 more than the north.
Italy repeats the pattern with more violence. A plate of pasta in the middle of Venice can run $18. In Viareggio, a beach town Italians actually use, giant plates of homemade pasta are $5. Same country. Same dish. The difference is whether the tables face a canal tourists photograph or a shoreline locals swim from.
Mountains do not usually have this problem, because there is nothing to photograph at the trailhead worth charging for. You eat where the road ends, and the road ends where the locals live.
Where the Beach Gets Cheap
Not every coastline punishes you. Lisbon and Porto are among the most affordable Western European capitals, with mid-range hotel costs 20 to 30 percent below Paris or Amsterdam. The Algarve coast delivers high-quality beach accommodation at rates well under what the French Riviera or the Amalfi Coast asks for the same thing.
Sri Lanka is the stronger play. Wildlife safaris, tea plantations and beaches, all at prices kept low by favorable currency exchange rates. It stays one of the low-cost countries going into 2026.
And the actual best beach in the world, by one ranking, is Koh Kradan, which took the number one spot on the Top 100 Beaches in the World 2023 list. A world-number-one beach in a country where lunch is $15 is not a contradiction. It is just a place that has not yet priced itself like Venice.
Getting There and Getting Around
Flights are not the barrier people assume. Booking domestic flights only a few days ahead, one traveller never paid more than about 50 euros, which is $54. Baggage costs extra, but only a few dollars. That is the whole air budget for moving between regions in a large country.
On the ground, local city buses and subways start at about $1. Intercity buses run $15 to $60 depending on distance. Entrance fees for popular attractions vary, but beaches and public parks are free or close to it. That last point matters more than it looks. A mountain trip is mostly entry fees and permits. A beach trip is mostly sitting down.
The Real Split
The honest comparison is not beach versus mountain. It is infrastructure versus scenery. Mountains charge you at the gate and then leave you alone. Beaches charge you at the table, every meal, and the price tracks how famous the sand is.
Carry a travel card or a debit and credit card with low transaction fees. It is cheaper than money exchange counters, and on a beach trip where you are paying small amounts constantly, the spread adds up faster than on a mountain trip where you pay once and walk.
So: $30 to $35 for a tent site, $35 to $45 for a hookup, $60 to $90 for the range. Against $5 pasta in Viareggio, $18 pasta in Venice, $15 lunches in Chiang Mai, $21 lunches in Bangkok, $27 dinners for two on Railay, and $54 flights booked days out. The mountains win on predictable cost. The beaches win on everything else, as long as you pick the right coastline.
