What A Day Costs
A mid-range hotel room in a well-reviewed, centrally-located property runs about $108 to $162 a night. That is converted from €100–150. In Western Europe, the daily mid-range figure sits at $120 to $250, covering a 3-star hotel or a well-placed vacation rental, two restaurant meals, and the occasional taxi or intercity train. Hotels in major Western European cities for 2026 start near €150 a night, which is $162.
A one-month budget report from one traveller came in at $1,900 to $2,100. Not per week. Per month. That is the whole number, boring and repeatable.
In Nepal, a cup of tea or coffee costs Rs. 200 to 400. Soft drinks run Rs. 200 to 500. A one-liter bottle of mineral water costs Rs. 100 to 400, and hot water costs around Rs. 100 to 300 per liter. If you are watching the budget, Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,000 a day covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The Motorcycle Math
One traveller priced out 6000€ with a motorcycle for 270 days. That is $6,480 for roughly nine months. Activities ate a quarter of the total. A quarter. On a nine-month trip, that is $1,620 spent on things to do rather than places to sleep.
Mexico went the other way. Ten percent of the total Mexico travel budget went to activities. The rest went elsewhere. That is the difference between a country where the paid experiences stack up and one where they do not.
Getting Between Places
A bus from Windhoek to Livingstone, Zambia costs roughly $55, depending on the exchange rate. Windhoek to Springbok, South Africa runs $65 to $85. Those are overland prices, not flight prices, and they move with the currency.
For a single country or a small region of Europe, a rental car or campervan can make sense if you split the cost. Car rentals can be found for as little as 25 EUR per day, which is $27. Gas is expensive. Do the arithmetic before you commit.
Eating Cheap Without Eating Bad
Many experienced travellers in Japan eat at least one konbini meal a day. Not to save money. Because the quality is legitimately good. That is a useful thing to know when a country has a reputation for being expensive. The cheapest meal is not always the worst one.
The same logic applies to the daily food number in Nepal. Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,000 is not a starvation budget. It is three meals, priced at what three meals actually cost.
The Number That Matters
Pick the destination, then pick the number. Western Europe at $120 to $250 a day is a different trip from a country where $14 covers all three meals. The monthly report that lands between $1,900 and $2,100 is not an outlier. It is what a disciplined mid-range trip costs when nothing goes wrong.
Nothing ever goes entirely right. That is the part the daily averages do not show.
