Where the Money Actually Goes
A full day of snorkeling, a lunch buffet and island hopping out of El Nido costs PHP1,200, or $27. That is the number to keep in your head when someone tells you island travel is expensive. It is not. It is just unevenly priced.
The trick to island nations is understanding that the flight in, the bed, and the boat are three separate budgets, and they behave nothing alike. Get one of them wrong and you can burn a week’s money in an afternoon.
Getting Between the Islands
The regional hubs are Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City and Manila. Budget carriers fly between most of them for $30 to $80. That range holds up across the region, and it holds up for domestic hops too, which matters more than people expect. When two islands sit far apart, a domestic flight is not a luxury, it is the only sane option, and booking a month ahead keeps you inside that $30 to $80 band. Wait until you are standing at the counter and you will pay something else entirely.
Then there is the boat question. Ha Long Bay is the famous one. Cat Ba is the cheaper one. Stay on Cat Ba and take a day tour out to the bay instead of booking an overnight cruise, and you cut the cost substantially. Cat Ba has its own beaches, its own sunset spots, and scooters for rent, which is the correct way to see it.
What a Bed Costs
This is where island travel splits into two different trips.
Five-star hotels in Bangkok start at $80 to $120 a night. That is a genuine five-star, in a capital city, for less than a mid-range motel in most of the United States. Fine dining in Bangkok, the kind with a tasting menu and a waiting list, runs $50 to $100 per person. Private tours and spa days will eat into that fast, but the baseline is low.
The islands are a different animal. Beachfront villas in Seminyak or Uluwatu run $150 to $500 a night. Island resorts elsewhere in the region hold a similar line, $200 to $500 for beachfront. Fine dining on Bali, at places like Locavore or Mozaic, is $60 to $120 per person. A private boat charter to Nusa Penida or the Gili Islands adds $100 to $300 per day on top of everything else.
So the same trip can cost $90 a night or $400 a night depending on which side of the water you sleep on.
The Season Tax
Expect to spend at least 30% more in popular areas, on the islands, and during high season. That is the floor, not the ceiling. Prices can easily double if you do not book early. Double. The same room, the same view, twice the money, because you decided in June to go in January.
A fourteen-day Thailand run looks like this: three days at Railay Beach in Krabi, three days in Bangkok, three in Chiang Mai, one in Chiang Rai, one at Ao Nang for the Hong Islands, two in Phuket, one in Krabi Town for the Phi Phi Islands. That is a lot of movement, which means a lot of transfers, which means the $30 to $80 flight band and the boat schedules are the spine of the whole budget.
Drinks and the Small Stuff
A cocktail at a beach bar runs about ฿350, which is $9.50. That is not cheap, and here is the thing nobody mentions: on the islands the wine is usually terrible and the cocktails are sometimes made with spirits of dubious origin. Check the reviews of anywhere you plan to drink. People do get what amounts to ethanol poisoning.
Small entry fees add up in ways you forget to plan for. Incahuasi Island in the Uyuni salt flats is 30 bolivianos per person, about $4.30. A worthwhile stop for the salt flat views and the cacti, and the kind of line item that never makes it into anyone’s spreadsheet.
One last thing, and it is specific to going alone. Thailand has the most developed solo travel infrastructure anywhere. Cooking classes, island tours, day trips, all priced per person and built for solo joiners. You will not pay a premium for being alone. Very few countries can say that.
