A chocolate bar costs $0.80 in Thamel. The same bar costs $3.50 at Thorong High Camp. That is the whole argument for carrying your own food, and it fits in one sentence.
Carrying snacks and electrolytes from Kathmandu saves $4 to $8 per day compared with buying on the trail. Over a two-week trek that is $56 to $112, which is a domestic flight in some countries or eleven nights in a cheap guesthouse in others. The weight is real. So is the saving.
The best meals I have had on the road cost between $1 and $3. Pad Thai in Thailand. Banh mi in Vietnam. Tacos in Mexico. None of them came from a place with a laminated menu in four languages. The cheap end of the food scale is not a compromise. It is often the point of the trip.
What the Visa Desk Adds
Visa costs are the line item most people forget until they are standing at a counter. If you need your visa processed quickly, an expedited processing fee can run from $100 to $300 depending on the country. That is not a rounding error. That is a week of accommodation in most of Southeast Asia.
Argentina now requires a reciprocity fee for US citizens even when you cross by land, and you have to buy it online ahead of time. Chile works differently. You pay only at the airport. Two neighbouring countries, two entirely different systems, and if you have not checked both before you book a bus across the border, you will find out at the worst possible moment.
Then there is ETIAS, the entry authorization for US citizens, at roughly $8. It is small. It is also new for 2026, which means it catches people who did their reading three years ago.
The Bed Tax
City tourist taxes have grown into a real daily cost. Venice, Barcelona and Paris all charge a daily stay tax now, ranging from about $2.16 to $10.80 per night at the current exchange rate. On a ten-night trip that is $21.60 at the low end and $108 at the high end. It gets added at check-in, after you have already committed to the room.
A local flight, one segment, averages $109 per person. Average flight duration is an hour and a half. Short hops are not automatically cheap, and the number to watch is not the fare but the fare plus the bag plus the seat plus whatever the airport charges you for existing.
Ground transport can still be almost nothing. A bus from Kurunegala to Dambulla in Sri Lanka costs around $0.12 and takes about two hours. Kurunegala functions as a major bus station, so connections onward are straightforward once you are there. Twelve cents. Two hours. That is the other end of the scale from a $109 flight.
Gear That Doesn’t Come With Straps
Bags are where budgets quietly break. A 40-litre pack with no strap-stowage system is a problem, and the absence of a hip belt on a bag that size is genuinely puzzling. Loaded properly, it needs one. The compatible sling bag that solves part of this costs an extra $50.
Fifty dollars is not nothing. It is roughly 23 days of the $2.16 nightly tourist tax, or 62 chocolate bars at Thamel prices, or 416 bus rides in Sri Lanka. Whether the pack is worth it depends entirely on what else you were going to spend that money on.
The Comparison Nobody Runs
A cost-of-living comparison for Southeast Asia, in US dollars, for a single person, per day, is the only honest way to plan. Daily totals matter more than any single price, because the single prices are the ones you remember and the daily totals are the ones that empty the account.
Families and business travellers run different numbers. So does the carbon cost of your bed, which does not appear on any receipt but is real. The figures above are the ones that do appear. $0.80 against $3.50. $4 to $8 a day. $100 to $300 for speed. $2.16 to $10.80 a night. $109 for ninety minutes in the air. $0.12 for two hours on a bus.
None of it is hidden. It is just spread across enough sources that most people stop reading before they add it up.
