What the Trek Actually Costs
A low-cost Nepal trek runs $35 to $50 per day. That figure breaks down into basic teahouse accommodation at $5 to $12 a night, three meals at $12 to $18 a day, and $3 to $5 for water and snacks. It is not a lot. It is also not the number that ruins a trip.
The number that ruins a trip is $10,000. That is what a hospital bill can look like after an injury overseas. People assume nothing bad will happen before or on their vacation. Then it does, and the bill arrives.
Slow Down and Save
The more you move, the more you spend on transport. Staying three to five nights in each city instead of one or two cuts flights, buses, and the small costs that pile up on transit days: airport food, luggage storage, last-minute tuk-tuks. A $40 day in one place is cheaper than two $25 days split by a $60 bus ticket and a $12 sandwich at a station.
This is not about deprivation. It is about arithmetic. Three nights in Pokhara at $35 a day is $105. Three nights spread across three towns, with two bus fares and a night in a transit hotel, is more. The slower version also leaves room for the thing you came for.
Coverage Numbers That Matter
For most international trips, at least $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage and $100,000 in medical evacuation is the floor. Some plans go higher. The point is that the gap between $50,000 and $10,000 is the gap between a story you tell and a debt you carry.

In Southern and East Africa, additional credit card surcharges from 5% to 8% may be charged when using your bank card. Use it only in an emergency. That is not a general rule for everywhere. It is a specific rule for a specific region, and it changes the math on a $40 withdrawal.
Carry enough cash for the day. Keep the card for the thing you cannot walk away from. A 5% surcharge on a $200 hospital deposit is $10. A 5% surcharge on a $10,000 bill is $500. Neither is the main problem, but only one is worth planning around.
What the Rest of the Trip Looks Like
Daily budget totals include one night of accommodation, three meals, local transport, one activity or entrance fee, and incidental expenses like drinks, snacks, and tips. Prices are averaged across each region’s major tourist areas. The exchange rate used is 1 USD to 32.6 baht, as of April 2, 2026. That is the frame. Everything else is a variation on it.
